In just its first season in the Naugatuck Valley League, the St. Paul girls basketball team has its first NVL Brass Division championship.
The Falcons moved to a perfect 11-0 in the division on Tuesday night with a 61-38 win over the Red Raiders of Derby to secure the Brass crown. Second-place Woodland is two games back with just one divisional game left to play.
Ashley Sulewski led the St. Paul charge with a team-high 13 points to go along with nine rebounds and three assists. Adele Ruel was the only other Falcon in double-digit scoring. She finished the game with 11 points and six boards.
St. Paul jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead. It led by 20 at the end of the third quarter.
Derby’s Mary Hyde scored her 1,000th point in the game and tallied a game-high 17.
The win improved the Falcons to 17-1 overall. Derby fell to 8-10 with the loss.
Northwestern 50, Terryville 33: It was an offensive struggle for all but one quarter for the Kangaroos Tuesday night.
Terryville scored 18 points in the third but combined to tally just 15 over the course of the other 24 minutes of the affair. After making the third quarter push to get back within four, 35-31, the ‘Roos were held to just two total points in the final frame.
Katelyn Natzke led Terryville (9-8) with 15 points.
Northwestern improved to 12-4 with the win.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Terryville 61, Northwestern 58: Jason Pranulis scored 29 points, pulled down 19 rebounds and added six assists to lead Terryville to a 61-58 victory over Northwestern.
The Highlanders were led by Bobby Lippincott’s 26 as he helped his club rally from a 14-point halftime deficit to cut it to one with just under a minute to go in the game.
After two missed Highlander free throws with under 10 seconds to play, Pranulis grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He hit both freebies at the other end to stake the ‘Roos to a three-point advantage. Lippincott’s baseline 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off target.
Brandon Gervickas added 10 points for Terryville, which now stands at 9-6 on the season.
BOYS SWIMMING
Bristol 97, Bulkeley 85: The Bristol swim team won all but one event to get past host Bulkeley.
The team of Dave Jalbert, Mike Petit, Tim Jalbert and Nick Plachno got things off to a good start for Bristol, winning the 200 medley relay in 2:00.83. It was the start of a 3-for-3 sweep in the day’s relay events.
Ethan Deal, Devon Walker, Petit and Jimmy Martin combined to win the 200 free relay while Zach Zupka, Walker, Lionel Gray and Martin conquered the 400 free relay.
Martin won two individual events as well, including breaking the team record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.90. Martin broke Will Banulski’s mark set in 2005.
Walker won both the 200 and 100 freestyle, Petit took the win in the 200 IM, Gray finished first in the 500 free and Tim Jalbert ran away with the 100 backstroke.
Ben Andrews had a nice day for Bristol, placing second in both the 500 free and the 100 breaststroke.
Jordan Sandino won on the diving board with a 153 point tally.
The win improved Bristol to 8-3 on the year. |
